One of the most UNFORGETTABLE fashion shows of all time! Versace Fall 1997 Couture

Gianni Versace's final collection showcased medieval and religious motifs that make this runway show so beautifully symbolic. Gianni was quoted explaining his inspiration as an "attitude of freedom", which was most obviously portrayed by Naomi Campbell in a metallic bridal mini dress. UGH! SO GOOD! Between the exquisite tailoring, bold pops of color, and the puff shoulders, I easily saw Gianni's influence on the sense of feminine style. Versace stopped showing at couture shows a long time ago, but Gianni certainly made his lasting mark while he was here.
ALSO: Did you know that Donatella can't sew a thing and has never physically created a garment? Look it up!
There was a noticeable sense of rebellion on the runway in the models' walks and presentations. Dark eye shadow, smug expressions, and that pulled back hair felt like a bold woman who means business was meant to wear these clothes. Exaggerated with structured puff shoulders, the cocktail dresses and skirt suits offered a powerful confidence, while sparkly numbers and crystal-embellished crosses brought the dazzling drama that we crave from the Versace brand. Interestingly, the cross motif seemed to replace the signature Greca pattern as the standout imagery. Using the cross so blatantly on shimmery sequin dresses, both daringly short and dramatically long, made for a thought-provoking contrast.
If anything, this collection continued Versace's legacy of redefining glamour and style in their fashion shows. Versace truly means luxury- you can't tell me those jacquard bath robes don't look fabulous and opulent! Also, I really must say, Naomi Campbell was an absolute superstar in this runway show. There were MANY strong walkers and fierce faces, but Naomi stood out in a way that only she could! Now, in 2023, we are in this fabulous chrome/metallic era in fashion and you can't help but credit designers like Gianni Versace when you see a chain mail bridal mini dress with a veil come down the runway! Naomi was clearly the girl for the job...no shade.
Don't forget to look for and call out your favorite models in the runway shows! I know there were some recognizable faces that I'll be getting to know better as I go through my list of 90s fashion show reactions.
