darktable live edit : dodging and burning to increase local contrast

How to turn a flat lighting with very little shadows into a moody and contrasted picture with no halos or artificial-looking local contrast ? This applies to #darktable but the logic is pretty much universal across imaging softwares, since the method derivates from analog filters.
