A playthrough of Sierra's 1999 graphic adventure game for PCs running Windows, Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned.

The intro picks up where the graphic novel included in the game box leaves off, so I've included the graphic novel at the very beginning. For a specific part of the game,  please follow the time codes below:

3:30    In-game Introduction
7:30    Day 1, beginning of gameplay
2:44:44  Day 2
6:37:08  Day 3
9:25:42  Finale
9:57:17  Assorted death scenes from the finale

The third chapter of the classic series was, like the first two, the product of a phenomenal script by writer Jane Jensen.  Now that Gabriel has conquered voodoo, become Shattenjager, saved an opera, and fought werewolves,  he takes on a far larger force in Christianity.  Beginning with the kidnapping of an infant prince, Gabriel now finds himself in a small town in rural France uncovering secrets of the Knights Templar and the holy grail. Fear not - though it might sound like Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code, the two works really only share basic subject matter.  It's an incredibly ambitious plot setup, but Jensen's extremely intelligent,  respectful treatment of the material makes for one of the most compelling stories ever found in a game.  The  puzzles also are usually a good, logical match for the action,  the infamous cat hair mustache puzzle notwithstanding, of course!

The acting is generally excellent throughout.  Grace no longer acts hyper hysterical at every possible turn, and the supporting characters are generally pretty convincing.  Tim Curry isn't nearly as good here as he was in Sins of the Fathers, and his accent slips more than once,  but still - when he nails a Gabriel joke,  it leaves it's mark. The sound design is incredible - the 3D spatial audio sounds natural despite being only in stereo,  and the soundtrack is beautiful, easily matching the quality and complexity of the previous two games.  The graphics are.... well, better than you'd expect from a fully 3D game in 1999, but they've aged a lot. They were never particularly attractive,  but some of the character models are hideous - they made Grace look like Shannon Dougherty with the eyeballs! There are also plenty of sharp angles in the landscapes,  blurry textures, and lots of awkward model clipping when the camera is too close. It does allow for much more freedom though,  and it serves the gameplay well. The interface is clean and easy to navigate, and things are generally easy to recognize, though the blurry textures can make some key spots hard to spot (grr... the tire tracks...). It absolutely takes some adjustment,  but it is pretty immersive once you get accustomed to it.

While I don't worship this one quite as much as I do the first two games,  it's still amazing and justifies it's place in the GK cannon. The story is the crown jewel here,  no mistake. And while I prefer 1 and 2, that's mainly because this one's graphics never lived up the to amazing style and quality of the older games-my humble opinion of course.  If yout enjoy point and click games,  though,  you're missing out if you've never given this one a fair shot.

And oh man, the reveals. So much epic stuff for series fans begins at the end of Day 2. I don't want to spoil it, but be ready to be very surprised more than once.
