name is Dr Deepak Ravindran and i'm a
pain consultant practicing for over 10
years and in my 10 years of practice
it's often disappointing for me because
by the time patients with spinal
stenosis are referred to me it has been
at least 5 to 6 years and often I do
wish that if they had come earlier we
would have had and been able to give
those patients a better set of
strategies to help manage the pain
because surgery is not required anymore
and is very rarely needed for this
condition but there are a lot of other
things that can be done with the help of
a pain consultant so what is the pain
consultant going to bring to this you
may ask because often in these
conditions you might have seen your GP
you might have had some initial
physiotherapy you might have trialed
some small trials of simple painkillers
and then you would have had a referral
to a surgeon as I mentioned before
surgery is very rarely needed so a pain
consultant and the multidisciplinary
team that they work with becomes
important in understanding what your
treatment options are because now in
these times you have a number of other
treatment strategies that can be put
forward in a holistic manner and that
can be personalized to your care in
order to get the outcome that you want
what are the treatment options then for
spinal stenosis
it's important for us to understand what
the causes are
because spinal stenosis refers to a
narrowing of the area for your nerves in
the middle of your back in your spine
this narrowing can happen in the neck so
you may have symptoms going into your
arms this narrowing can happen in your
lower back then you would have symptoms
going in your legs the narrowing can be
because of disc related problems or
joint arthritis related problems and
each of them presents with corresponding
muscle spasm and therefore treatments
can be injection based treatments can be
slightly stronger nerve pain tablets or
are the strategies which can be
personalized to what you're having and
to the other medical conditions that you
suffer from and it is important that you
discuss all this with the pain
consultant so that they can help fashion
a proper treatment strategy for you so
don't wait any longer get yourself to
your GP and ask them for a referral to
the nearest pain clinic and to the pain
consultant you may even choose to go for
a private option if that is quicker
