So many well-meaning Wing Chun people say it that we often accept it without any scrutiny whatsoever.  That's the danger of slogans and propaganda.  They fly under the radar.  But here's the thing: to be aggressive does not mean that we're always moving forward.  To be aggressive doesn't mean we have to end a scrap in five seconds (or any other arbitrary number).  We "end" it when we can.  All this rubbish about Wing Chun doesn't back up and all that are simply the regurgitations of half-thought out mantras.  To be a true martial artist means that we're strong in body and mind.

Remember Mike Tyson?  Of course you do.  He was pretty destructive, wasn't he?  Well, in his prime from '86-'89 he was a defensive wizard.  He didn't just march straight at guys throwing bombs, hoping to put them away.  On the contrary, Tyson's early stoppages were very often the result of his DEFENSE!  That's right.  He'd make them miss and make them pay.  That's what it's all about.  He used explosive footwork and upper body evasion to do both things at once - make the guy miss and set him up for a counter.

Well, if Tyson didn't walk straight at his opponents, we probably shouldn't either.  In this video Sifu Jason answers a sadly all too often criticism of using evasive footwork to set up one's inside attack.
