mumps or beke ay isang viral n sakit kung saan ang salivary glands o gawaan ng laway ay inaatake ng mumps virus. Management centers on symptom relief . Ibuprofen and aspirin is not advised for patients less than 16years old.
The disease has a ten day duration which confers lifelong immunity. The salivary gland becomes tender and swollen (located in front of the ears). Mababaog po ba ang anak ko? Common complications are swollen testicles/ovaries. Mumps orchitis happens in 1/4male and infertility is RARE/bihira. There is shrinkage of the testicles with lower sperm count.
Other complication: one sided reversible sensorineural deafness / pagkabingi. Rare o bihira ang severe permanent deafness. Mumps, left untreated may cause mumps encephalitis/meningitis as in our case. Prevention is better than cure, do have yr child 12-15mos have m.m.r vaccine and catch up shots if lampas n sa edad.
