Dan Bygd, Senior Technical Services Engineer, talks about selecting the proper back-up pad for your random orbital sander.
Back-up Pad Basics (00:18)
3M offers a wide range of back-up pads in our portfolio. The first step is to determine whether you are using a five-inch random orbital sander or a six-inch random orbital sander. Next, decide if you want to use a hook-and-loop attachment system or a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) attachment system.
Choose one of three back-up pads (00:40)
3M has three types of back-up pads: the low-profile backing pad, the low-profile finishing pad and the standard design back-up pad. Of the three primary back-up pads offered in our portfolio, Dan often recommends starting with the low-profile pad.
Low Profile Backing Pad (00:55)
This is a good general-purpose pad that comes standard on 3M™ Random Orbital Sanders. It is the most aggressive of the three back-up pads and is recommended for flat sanding operations.
Low-profile Finishing Pad (01:12)
If you are seeking a high-gloss finish, Dan recommends the low-profile finishing pad. With soft-density foam, this pad will leave a finer finish. It will not leave as deep of a scratch as the other two pads and is recommended for use on flat surfaces or contoured surfaces.
Standard Design Back-up Pad (01:28)
The third pad is the standard profile pad. It is the thickest of the three pads, and it has a 45-degree tapered edge which provides flexibility. This allows the sanded area to be "feather edged" or more easily blended.
