At Agra Innovate, Wandie Kazeem moderated a Panel session on the ‘Challenges of Women in Agriculture and Strategies for Sustainable Development’ with Dr. Ebby Luvaga, Professor at the Department of Economics Iowa State University; Nkiru Okpareke, CEO Enviro Green Farms; Mira Mehta, CEO Tomato Jos, and Onyaole Patience, CEO Replenish Farms. They all address factors that limit women participation in agriculture and deny them a sustainable living from the sector. Dr. Ebby Luvaga highlighted a lack of inclusive government policies and cultural issues limiting women’s participation. Nkiru Okpareke emphasizes lack of access to entitlement and resources and a negative perception of women in farming as barriers to women participation. Mira Mehta and Onyaole Patience buttresses the causal factors of reduced women participation in agriculture with inadequate access to infrastructure (ICTs & transportation) and a lack of capacity building training support. They also talk on the measures that could help increase women’s participation in the sector: an adjustment of land tenure system that redistributes equally the power to own land, a robust extension support, the education and employment of women in the sector to instill confidence to participate and skills to compete at higher level. They advise women and other category of the Nigerian populace interested in agriculture.
