A century ago it was uncommon for lathes, mills, ect to have their own source of power. Most often they were run on a belt. This video shows an assortment of machinery being run from an overhead line shaft system that was powered by a single medium size stationary steam engine.
Set ups like this one were common in factories during the early 1900s.
