This the only known surviving example of Marklin's steam workshop or "machine hall" model no. 4283 produced from 1904-09. The workshop is slightly smaller than its sister model 4284; these were among the largest, most complex, and expensive "toys" ever offered by the company. It was advertised to run on either live steam from the vertical engine (no. 4112/11) or with its electric motor using house current. Belting up the steam engine to the electric motor gives the impression that the steam engine is also running in the second half of the video. The miniature switchboard was made of slate with a faux marble finish; its tiny working rotary switches control the lights and electric motor.
