Today the Netherlands and Belgium make up the better part (sorry Luxembourg) of the Benelux. The border is a bit of a mess of enclaves but no border guards or great fortifications suggest any distrust between the two nations. And yet. This was not always the case. Just months after the coronation of Belgium's first king, Leopold I, the Dutch army invaded Belgium in what would become known in Dutch as the Tiendaagse Veldtocht (the 10 Day Campaign) during which large parts of the rebellious southern provinces were occupied and the fate of Belgium would walk a knife's edge.
