Why isn't the Dutch Flag Orange?

William of Orange. Orange tulip fields. Footballers playing in orange. No colour is more associated with the Netherlands, so it might come as a surprise that it does not appear on its flag. But once upon a time it did, and it was the standard that the top stripe of the horizontal tricolour was an orange rather than a red. What caused this to change?
