Electric Current
The flow of electric charge is known as electric current.
Electric current is denoted by a letter 'i'.
Electric current is expressed by the rate of flow of electric charges.
The rate of flow means the amount of charge flowing through a particular area in unit time.
If a net electric charge(Q) flows through a cross-section of any matter in time t,
Electric Current = Net charge / Time
i = Q/t
SI unit of electric current is ampere(A).
1 Ampere = 1 Coulomb / 1 second
- If positive charge flows, the direction of the electric current is the same as the direction of the flow of charge.
- If negative charge flows, the direction of electric current is opposite of the direction of the flow of charge.
Now solve one simple question.
Can electric current flow in Conductor and Insulator?
Conductor:
Conductors are materials that permit electrons to flow freely from particle to particle.
An object made of a conducting material will permit charge to be transferred across the entire surface of the object.
The current can flow in the conductor.
Insulator:
In contrast to conductors, insulators are materials that impede the free flow of electrons from atom to atom and molecule to molecule.
The particles of the insulator do not permit the free flow of electrons.
So, no current is possible in the insulator.
