Buckle up. It all goes back to 2002. That’s when Dassault Group, a French aviation company, contacted law enforcement in Greece.
Dassault claimed that a mysterious hacker was stealing and selling sensitive corporate data online. The plot thickens from here.
This criminal called himself ASTRA, meaning “A star” in Latin or “A supernatural weapon” in Sanskrit. Looking back at ASTRA’s crimes, his name sounds like a painfully accurate description.
Over the course of five years, this hacker stole secret technologies for making weapons, cars, and jets. ASTRA sold this data in batches to at least 250 people in Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, and unidentified Middle East states. But that’s not all. The damage he caused amounted to 360 million dollars. Was he ever caught?
Oh yes. After a six-year-long manhunt, the collaboration between French and Greek law enforcement officials finally provided results. On January 25, 2008, ASTRA was arrested in Athens, Greece. He lived in an apartment rented under a false name. So who is this dangerous man?
It’s hard to tell. Law officers reported the arrest of a 58-year-old Greek mathematician. They claimed that he was a highly skilled and experienced hacker who knew how to cover his tracks. According to some reports, ASTRA had an accomplice in the UK who helped him find possible buyers. But that’s about it. The identity of this criminal remains a mystery. The authorities never revealed it.
