On this episode of Diamonds 101, we present five diamond shape comparisons and go into a little bit of detail on their differences and similarities.  When selecting which center-stone shape you want for your engagement ring it is always good to at least stack it up versus one other to help solidify your decision.  In order of appearance these are the comparisons presented:

- Round VS Square Cushion Cut Diamond:
Similarities: Both of these shapes have 1.:1 ratios and brilliant style faceting.  They are both adept at hiding color and are also very versatile and look great in almost ever setting imaginable.  These have been two of the most popular shapes for the past decade so this is a main reason why they are often compared against each other
Differences: Round diamonds will have a larger faceup appearance.  As far as cut goes, round diamonds are the only shape that receives a cut grade.  Cushions have many varieties of cuts (crushed ice, brilliant, antique, square/elongated) so choosing the right one can be much more complex.  Finally - as far as pricing goes a round diamond of the same size/quality will be more expensive than a cushion cut (and any other shape for that matter).

- Oval Cut VS Pear Shape Diamond:
Similarities:  Both of these shapes are elongated and provide excellent finger coverage. Both diamonds are also brilliant cut which helps give them a nice sparkle and also lends itself well to hiding of inclusions. On the same note because there is more surface area on these stones it tends to show color more easily. For those two reasons the most popular color/clarity combination for these is colorless and SI clarity like these two diamonds here.
Differences: Pear shape diamonds have a sharper appearance and come to a point at one end while ovals are rounded on both sides.  The tip of a pear shape diamond should always be protected in the setting; show ring of pear shape with tip protected.  For this reason pear shaped diamonds will typically have longer length to width ratios; pears are usually in the 1.5 to 1.7 range while ovals are in the 1.35 to 1.6 range.  On the same note pear shapes will have longer measurements and provide even more finger coverage: for instance a 2 carat oval will usually be around 10mm long while a 2 carat pear shape is 11mm

Radiant Cut VS Emerald Cut Diamond:
Similarities: Both of these diamond shapes have parallel sides and cut corners giving them identical outlines.  In addition, you will typically find these shapes within the same range of length to width ratios: 1.25:1 for a wider looker to up to 1.45:1 for a more slender, longer appearance.
Differences: The glaring difference here is the faceting of each stone; as you can see an emerald cut has long parallel facets also know as step cut. On the other hand, a radiant has a brilliant style faceting and has a more continuous sparkle throughout.  Deciding if you want the elegant, long flashes of sparkle that come from an emerald cut of the dazzle of a radiant is totally a matter of opinion.

Princess VS Asscher Cut Diamond
Similarities:  Both shapes are intended to be square with 1:1 as the ratio up to 1.05:1. And have geometric shapes with parallel sides
Differences: The most glaring differences here are the corners of the stones and the faceting.  Like an emerald, asschers have step cut faceting for a hall of mirrors effect. It also has cut corners which is contrast to the princess cut which is notable for its pointed corners.  Just like the radiant vs emerald cut example above, the step cut asscher shows color less and inclusions more while princess cuts are the opposite.

Marquise VS Heart: There isn’t much in the way of similarities here except that both of these shapes are often overlooked but have some unique characteristics that make them desirable. The marquise is the most naturally elongated shape of all diamond cuts; with length to width ratios in the 1.8:1 to 2.2:1 range, the finger coverage you can get is unrivaled. They also have pointed tips which give it a very distinct appearance
A heart shape diamond is a romantic shape and as the name implies it looks like a heart.  This diamond cut was actually highly popular a couple of decades ago and you will see it from time to time in our custom designs.
