South Africa is set to pilot a new HIV vaccine that can prevent transmission among HIV negative people.

Previously available in the U.S. for nearly 400 thousand rand per person, the vaccine may eventually be available for just under 2 thousand rand in South Africa.

The country has about 8 million people living with the virus.

The global health initiative behind the pilot study said it hoped the drug would get approval of the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority early next year.

Deputy director of the African Health Research Institute, Professor Thumbi Ndungu explains further.
