A quick test of fitting the neck to the body showed it was a little on the tight side, which is perfect. It’s way easier to take away some material for a perfect fit than to add it. Looking at the electronics, it’s clear that this kit is not for beginners. None of the electronics come prewired, you even have to attach the capacitors to the tone pots. The hardware looks to be of normal kit quality (aka it will get you by until you can upgrade it later). The bigsby style tremolo had a bubble in the chrome platting, which really bummed me out. I emailed the fretwire to see if they had a replacement swing arm for the tremolo that I could have. They assured me that they keep extra inventory of this stuff all the time just for this reason, and instead of just replacing the swing arm, in a few days I had a whole new tremolo on my doorstep. Thanks guys! Serious bro move. Great service over there at the fretwire. Now onto the build: Because this is a set neck design, I needed to shape the headstock before I attached the neck because I wouldn’t be able to do so after it was attached. Also, typically one would apply their paint/stain/and or finish before gluing as well. But since I like to review these kits in the raw before I mod them, I left it as is. I like my kit reviews like I like my women...all natural...and curvy...with a long neck...anyway, Once I was happy with the headstock shape, I glued in the neck. To get a perfect fit for the neck joint, I had to file off a small amount of material in the neck pocket. The fit was so tight that I didn’t even need a clamp to glue it together, just the pressure from the tight pocket held it in place perfectly while the glue dried. Before I wired up the electronics I caught a mistake. With my kit I received two 500k audio taper pots, and two 500k linear taper pots. For volume knobs you really need audio taper pots if you want to...you know...control your volume. With this gretsch style setup, I need three volume pots. So I just reached into my box of spare components and replaced one of the linear pots with an audio pot. Done. But if I didn’t have a spare on hand I would’ve had to email the fretwire and I’m sure they would’ve sent me replacements, but seriously, I’m not that high maintenance.. So I just called it good and moved on. To wire it up, I followed a schematic I downloaded from the fretwire support site. It’s a classic gretsch style wiring which is actually pretty complex: with a 3 way pickup selector, individual volumes for blending the pickups, a master volume, and master tone. One of the challenges of this setup is how spread apart everything is. So to make sure I wired everything up with enough slack to reach each spot, I used the guitar as a template with my components upside down. Look at that rats nest of wires! After wiring it up, perhaps the biggest challenge was installing all the electronics. Without a trap door on this guitar, you have to carefully feed each component thru using a lead line, like wire or string, that you’ve strung thru from the other side. This proved to be a very tedious and frustrating experience. But once that was over with, the rest of the hardware went on pretty easy. Now that it’s built, let’s hear it! For this demo I’m recording straight into Logic Pro, and I’ll be using the British combo amp simulation (aka Vox ac30)... ...read the rest of the blog at https://gunsandguitars.net (disclosure, links in this description may be affiliate links)
