THE PRESENT PERFECT
The indicative is the most common and frequent verbal mode. It's used to indicate a fact, an action or an idea that is real, certain and objective.
The present perfect is an indicative tense that expresses the past and, unlike the imperfect (→ http://learnamo.com/indicativo-imperf... ), it's a compound tense. Let's find out how to form it:
Present indicative of the auxiliary (essere or avere) + Past participle of the verb
If you still have doubts about the use of "essere " or "avere" as auxiliaries... in this video you will find all the answers to your questions!
THE PAST PARTICIPLE
The past participle of a verb is very important to form compound tenses (including the present perfect).
The past participle of the verb "essere" is → stato
The past participle of the verb "avere" is → avuto
The past participle of verbs in -ARE is formed by adding the ending -ato. Ex: mangiare → mangiato
The past participle of verbs in -ERE is formed by adding the ending -uto. Ex: conoscere → conosciuto
The past participle of verbs in -IRI is formed by adding the ending -ito. Ex: finire → finito
Now, let's see how the present perfect of auxiliaries is formed:
ESSERE AVERE
Io sono stato/a
Tu sei stato/a
Lui/lei è stato/a
Noi siamo stati/e
Voi siete stati/e
Loro sono stati/e
Io ho avuto
Tu hai avuto
Lui/lei ha avuto
Noi abbiamo avuto
Voi avete avuto
Loro hanno avuto
Examples:
Stamattina siamo stati dal dentista.
Sono i giocattoli che i bambini hanno avuto a Natale.
N.B. When the auxiliary is "essere", the past participle always agrees in gender and number with the subject → Laura è stata brava, invece Paolo e Luca sono stati cattivi.
Something similar also happens to other verbs (based on their respective auxiliaries):
MANGIARE PARTIRE
Io ho mangiato
Tu hai mangiato
Lui/lei ha mangiato
Noi abbiamo mangiato
Voi avete mangiato
Loro hanno mangiato
Io sono partito/a
Tu sei partito/a
Lui/lei è partito/a
Noi siamo partiti/e
Voi siete partiti/e
Loro sono partiti/e
Ex: Ieri abbiamo mangiato la lasagna, che buona! Poi nel pomeriggio siamo partiti per gli Stati Uniti.
The past participle, however, is very irregular! Find the list of irregular verbs on our website!
MODAL VERBS
The past participle of the modal verbs is:
Dovere → dovuto
Volere → voluto
Potere → potuto
Sapere → saputo
Examples of using these participles for the formation of the present perfect of modal verbs:
Ha dovuto lasciare il lavoro per dei litigi.
Oggi devi fare quello che non hai voluto fare ieri.
Non ho potuto dirglielo perché era andato via.
Come hanno saputo del vostro divorzio?
