Have you ever wondered how to facet a gemstone? Today's gem that's ready for precision cutting and polishing is actually two. This is my second attempt at this special, artistic gemstone: a faceted opal doublet. This is done by faceting a quartz and opal together, and, if we cut it right, the result can be fascinating! Today we'll perform the lapidary art of cutting and polishing this opal doublet into a brilliant gemstone.

▶ FAQ
* What is gemcutting/faceting?
Shaping & polishing gemstones is a craft called faceting— aka gemcutting. I'm here to bring attention to this seldom seen artform by taking you through its rewarding (and satisfying) process!
* What does "precision cut" mean?
My specific branch of gemcutting is a technique called "precision" cutting, which strives for symmetry, proportion, brilliance, and precise facet meets. Overall, it's the color, shine, and the gem's best potential that takes priority over its final size– though I also strive to select the best shape for the gemstone in order to preserve as much material as possible (aka its "yield")
