국산 전투무인차량, 미군기지서 첫 시연 Unmanned ground vehicles are considered a key part of future warfare. On Tuesday, South Korea's Hanwha Aerospace demonstrated its own U-G-V to American forces at Camp Humphreys in South Korea for the first time. Lee Seung-jae has more. This is the Arion-SMET unmanned ground vehicle produced by South Korea's Hanwha Aerospace. On a single charge, the UGV can cruise for more than 100 kilometers and is able to avoid different obstacles along the way. It tracks enemy movement in real-time and automatically turns its muzzle once it hears gunshots or other weapons. The weapon embedded in the UGV can rotate 360 degrees and can fire up to 200 rounds. All of these features were demonstrated for the first time at the U.S. Army Garrison, Camp Humphreys in South Korea, on Tuesday. During the showcase of the Arion-SMET, the vehicle proved a variety of unmanned technologies to support infantry troops on the battlefield, such as remote-controlled and autonomous driving both on paved and unpaved roads, obstacle avoidance, gun-shot source localization, and more. It was also the first time the U.S. has inspected the performance of Korean weapons at the USFK base in Pyeongtaek, with the commander of the 8th US Army and others directly participating. All this could provide a further boost to South Korea's arms exports. "The U.S. military is running a similar vehicle business, but one supplier cannot satisfy all consumers. If there is something lacking there, I think there is a possibility for us." Hanwha Aerospace added the Arion-SMET has already proved its outstanding mission capabilities during a ROK Army trial earlier this year in a program to test the performance of weapons systems for overseas exports. In October, the South Korean UGV was chosen as one piece of military ground equipment to be tested by the US military under a functional test program aimed at assessing matured foreign technologies that can fill U.S. forces’ existing capability gaps.
