One of the last projects Revolution Studios had in development before their deal with Columbia Pictures expired was a dark musical prison comedy entitled Slammer, written by Tim Metcalfe and Sara Goodman from a story by Metcalfe and John Slotnick. Originally a vehicle for Julia Roberts, the film would've starred Sarah Jessica Parker as a crafty publicist named Maggie Ray, who is framed for theft and shipped to Sing Sing prison in New York. In an attempt to polish the prison's image, she produces an inmate-led musical that could save her career. Jack O'Brien and later Todd Graff were attached to direct, but the closest it came to happening was under the helm of Adam Shankman, whose credits included A Walk to Remember, Bringing Down the House, and The Pacifier. The film's songs were to have been penned by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman of Hairspray, with whom Shankman worked on the film version of that musical, which he left Slammer to direct. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"
