Try these nutritious Chana/ Chickpea Idlis which are accompanied by my super easy and healthy coconut chutney ! This delicious combo is rich in protein and make for a great breakfast or meal, especially for vegetarians and vegans !

INGREDIENTS FOR IDLI
*1 cup chickpeas/ kabuli chana/ काबुली चना
*1/2 cup split urad dal/ skinned black gram/ उरद दाल
*1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds/ मेथी सीड्ज़
*1/4 cup flattened rice/ poha/ पोहा
*1/4 cup rava/ semolina/ sooji/ पोहा/ सूजी
*3/4 tsp salt or as required/ नमक
*water as required for rinsing and soaking

INGREDIENTS FOR CHUTNEY
*1/2 cup fresh chopped coconut/ नारियल
*1/4 cup peanut/ मूँगफली
*2-3 green chillies/ हरी मिर्च
*1 inch ginger/ अदरक
*a small piece of tamarind/ इमली
*3/4 tsp salt or as required/ नमक
*3/4 cup coriander leaves/ हरा धनिया
*1 cup water

INGREDIENTS FOR TEMPERING
*1 tbsp oil/ तेल
*1/2 tsp mustard seeds/ राई
*1/4 tsp cumin seeds/ जीरा
*few curry leaves/ कड़ी पत्ता
*a pinch of asafoetida/ हींग
*a dry red chilli/ सूखी लाल मिर्च
*a pinch of red chilli powder/ लाल मिर्च पाउडर

INSTRUCTIONS
1- in a large bowl, add chickpeas followed by urad dal, fenugreek seeds and poha. Rinse them a couple of times. Add in some fresh water and let them soak for around 8-9 hours.
2- after 8 hours, add them into the blender along with the same water ( don’t add all the water at once. Use as required for the creamy consistency ) to make a smooth and creamy batter. Transfer the batter in a large bowl, add in the rava, give a good mix. Cover the bowl and let the batter ferment for about 9-10 hours ( the fermentation process may take a little longer if you are living in a colder place ).
3- once fermented, add in the salt in the batter and give a gentle mix. Grease your idli mould nicely with oil and start filling it with the batter ( make sure not to over fill ).
4- heat 1 cup of water in your idli steamer. Place the idli mould, cover the steamer and let it cook for around 12-14 minutes on low-medium heat.
5- Meanwhile add all ingredients of chutney in a blender and blend until creamy. Transfer the chutney in a bowl and keep it aside. For tempering, heat oil in a pan on medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them crackle. Now add cumin seeds followed by rest of the ingredients of tempering, give a quick mix and quickly pour the tempering over chutney. Mix very well and the chutney is ready.
6- after 12 minutes, turn off the heat, allow the idlis to cool for a minute or two. Carefully remove the idlis with the help of a spoon. And serve with chutney !!
