In George Frederick McKay's book Creative Orchestration he outlines eight different textures you can use when orchestrating music, and then discusses the idea of blending those textures together in different combinations to produce new results.
For the examples we'll take two pairs of Breath of the Wild orchestrations that we made in previous videos and combine them to create new hybrid textures.
Hybrid textures are a glimpse into the practical truth of orchestration: even though you can identify the eight different textures in the orchestral repertoire, you're just as likely to find pieces of music that mix and match the textures. Understanding that these "complicated" arrangements are really just putting together the simpler layers can help you make more sense of them.
