In this video, I’ll break down his full intense, grueling, borderline insane training routine and diet that he adhered to leading up to those fights.
But first, lets talk about how Mike Tyson even got involved with the sport of boxing.

At his peak, Mike Tyson’s workout routine was as intense as his demeanor inside the ring. Tyson’s routine would involve training 50-60 hours per week.

His day would start early at 4am. Hours before most men wake up, but Tyson was anything but most men. After some light stretching and road work, consisting of up to 10 km. broken up in to a 3-5 mile jog and couple mile walk, he’d shower, and then head back to bed for a nap.

Upon reawakening, he’d eat a nutritional breakfast consisting of oatmeal, milk and orange juice. and then down several supplements with a liter of water. These supplements consisted of magnesium, zinc, vitamin d, b-complex and fish oil tablets.

By noon, the real hard work began, which was primarily boxing for the next 2 hours. This consisted of shadow boxing, mitt work, heavy bag and speed bag routines. It should be noted that he used an unusually heavy punching bag during his teenage years in order to develop extra punching power.
One unique aspect of Mike’s boxing training was the emphasis on a piece of equipment called a slip bag. The purpose of the slip bag is to get a fighter in the habit of moving his head correctly. This was bag was perfect for Mike’s style.

To put all his skills to work, he’d then do 8-12 rounds of sparring. The sparring was hard and replicated an actual fight and Tyson also sparred without head gear.

For lunch, at 2 o’clock, Mike would typically eat 12 ounces of boiled chicken and 2 cups of rice, and wash it down with 8 ounces of orange juice. In order to Keep his energy high, he usually had natural fruit juices with every meal.

After the high protein and high carb lunch, Mike would be back in the gym for another boxing session. The second boxing workout of the day focused primarily on skill training and calisthenics.
Speaking of calisthenics, Mike would do 2,000 air squats, 2,500 sit-ups, 500 push-ups, 500 bench dips, 500 barbell shrugs, and 20 minutes of wrestler bridges each day.
Most of the time, he would split this up over ten sets and complete it throughout the day.

For example, 500 pushups would be broken down into 10 sets of 50.
It should be noted that for a snack between lunch and dinner, Mike would have a protein shake blended with several bananas in order to help aid recovery during the intense workouts and refuel his energy.
As far as shrugs and neck bridges, he primarily used these trap and neck workouts to increase his ability to take a punch, which made it less likely for him to get knocked out or concussed. In his prime, Tyson had a massive 20 inch neck.

He finished his 2 boxing the workout with twenty to thirty minutes of intense jump rope work.

Dinner came at 7pm. Mike typically had a 12 ounce steak and 3 cups of pasta and 8 ounces of orange juice. With all his hard training done for the day, having this meal be the largest worked out well as the high-calorie meal helped boost recovery and prepare him for the next day of training day.

After dinner, he often went on light jog or jumped on the exercise bike before spending his evening either studying his favorite fighters of the past or watching fight tape and studying his next opponent with trainer Kevin Rooney. By 9 o’clock it was lights out.

Mike Tyson would stick to this daily routine 6 days a week, and take day 7, Sundays off. As disciplined as he was, Mike did make room for the occasional cheat meals like ice cream and his favorite cereal, Captain Crunch.
