Master wheelwright Jürgen Steck from Langenau loves making wagon wheels. Such a wheel consists of spokes, rims, a hub and tires made of iron. "In the beginning, it's just a piece of wood" and after a week of manual work, he has produced a wagon wheel. It is a profession with great rarity value. Jürgen Steck is one of the very few who have mastered this craft to perfection. Jürgen Steck usually receives his orders from traditional associations who want to restore an old carriage or an old fire engine. This time, he is to build cannon wheels for a 15th century cannon. A medieval association searched for a long time and found one of the last master wainwrights. He did his research in old military books. The first part of the wagon wheel is the hub, which he makes from elm wood. The hub has to rest and dry out for a while. In the meantime, he splits the oak spokes and cuts the rim segments to size. For the most part, he does without machines. Once everything is assembled and adjusted, the master blacksmith gets to work and applies the red-hot iron parts to the rims.
