Hellcat! It’s the latest incarnation of the revered Dodge Charger that first rose to fame here in San Francisco in the 1968 hit movie, Bullitt. It had two doors, 375 bhp, and back then, was the world’s fastest production car.

But this is no ordinary muscle car. With an inconceivable 707 – brake- horsepower from a supercharged 6.2 litre V8, this tyre-frying 4-door sedan is more like a terrain-hugging missile.

Its fury and thunderous exhaust note, strikes fear into the heart of the competition, and we think the maniacs at Dodge have got the family car formula - just right.

It’s the combination of scoops, vents and the Hellcat face that adorns the bodywork that separates the standard SRT Charger from this monster. And it goes as good as it looks.

Inside, there’s also plenty to like. The Nappa leather sports seats are superb, loads of bolster and loads of comfort up front and in the back.

There’s also plenty of soft touch surfaces and polished metal accents, but you’re not likely to confuse this cockpit with any of the German makes, though for this kind of performance, you’ll be paying tens-of-thousands more.

No shortage of equipment, either. There’s a large touch screen with satnav, high-end sound system and heated and cooled seats to name just a few of the lengthy features list.
