Why Is There No Schlage "D" Keyway? [#SchlageWeek Day 4]

Almost everyone is familiar with the Schlage "C" keyway.  Some of you, after watching these videos this week, are now aware of Schlage's "E" and "F" and "G" keyways.  But why does the series start with "C"?  What were the "A" and "B" keyways?  And -- most baffling to me -- why is there no "D" keyway??  Well, after a lot of searching, I finally found the answer!
