In this video, you will learn about the deadliest organism in the world, bacteriophages, and how they might be the solution to one of humanities greatest medical challenges, antibiotic resistant bacteria. This video will describe what bacteriophages and superbugs are, and then look closer at the functions of bacteriophages, how they interact with our cells and bacterial cells, how bacteriophage treatment is done and can cure serious infections, and finally some limitations of the technology. While doctors and medical researchers have been puzzled by superbugs in the past, this new promising technology might be the solution that we’ve been looking for. With new research, bacteria may be reduced to an afterthought when thinking of dangers to humanity. Introduction: 0:00 What are Superbugs, why are they Dangerous?: 0:45 What are Bacteriophages?: 1:27 How do bacteriophages interact with humans and bacteria?: 2:09 How is bacteriophage treatment done?: 2:45 Current treatment methods: 3:28 Limitations of bacteriophages: 4:04 Can bacteriophages enhance current treatment practices?: 5:31 Conclusion: 6:06 This video was made by McMaster University students Thirumagal Gowrikanthan, Zunaira Ahmad, Cameron Walters, and Runisan Natheeswaran in collaboration with the Demystifying Research McMaster Program.
