During the reign of the Tudor Queen Elizabeth I, there were many men who wanted to marry her to secure power, wealth and influence for themselves. One of them was Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex who caught the eye of the Queen. He was a much younger courtier, and was a handsome young man and he and the Queen played cards long into the night. However he was an ambitious man, who failed miserably as a military commander and this came back to haunt him. He volunteered to lead the English Army against the Irish rebels, and because of this he failed spectacularly and the Queen saw his actions in Ireland as treason.

Robert Devereux tried to return to court and he offended the Queen greatly, and was then placed under house arrest. But during this he then tried to create a rebellion and uprising against Elizabeth I, which became known as Essex' Rebellion. This failed, and ultimately he was imprisoned at the Tower of London and was then sentenced to death. He was one of very few people who were allowed to be executed within the walls of the Tower of London, but his execution did not got to plan.
