Letterlocking: Robert Devereux’s pleated letter to Queen Elizabeth I, with a paper lock, England (1590s)

Modelled after Devereux’s pleated letter to Queen Elizabeth I (c.1590), Robert Devereux, Second Earl of Essex's letters addressed to Queen Elizabeth I (1590–1601), the British Library, Add. MS 74256, fol. 11.

Model found in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries (MIT), Unlocking History Research Group archive, MC 0760.

After folding his letter, Robert Devereux, Second Earl of Essex, wrapped a narrow band of paper around the letterpacket to lock it. He then applied warm, red sealing wax on either side of the packet to hold the band in place before impressing his signet into it. This style of letterlocking has little-to-no-security built into its interior and is one of several different variants Devereux used to lock his letters to the Queen. See Robert Devereux’s spiral locked letter to Queen Elizabeth I, England, England (ca. 1590).

The "pleated" letter transforms into a highly-secure variation with built-in anti-tamper features when it meets the following criteria: a triangle-shaped paper lock is cut from the actual letter being sent and is used to secure the letter shut instead of silk floss, the paper lock weaves through a slit or slits that penetrate all the panels of the folded letter, the sealing wax secures the paper lock in place, and the recipient must tear the paper lock to gain access to the contents inside. See Devereux’s triangle-locked letter to Queen Elizabeth I locked in this style.
