Project: 3D Reconstruction of two Western Australian Shipwrecks - the Belinda (1824) and the Star (1880)

Abstract: The Star (1880) and Belinda (1824) are historically significant Western Australian shipwrecks which were photographically surveyed in 1983 and 1991 respectively. The legacy photography was originally used for contemporary stereoscopic viewing but given the recent advancements in photogrammetric 3D reconstruction processing (P3DR) technology, these site surveys are also well suited for the generation of digital 3D models for presentation and continued analysis.
High-resolution scans of black and white film were processed using the software package Metashape by Agisoft, to digitally reconstruct the complete wooden hull of both shipwrecks. Despite the relatively low number of usable photographs (73 for the Star and 76 for the Belinda) alongside challenges with image overlap, the reconstructions were successful in producing 3D models sufficient for viewing and exploring through interactive experiences. The successful reconstruction of the wrecks demonstrates the capability of P3DR techniques on legacy photography in which digital 3D models can be created from photos captured 40 years ago with impressive visual fidelity. The two models have been provided to the Western Australian Maritime Museum for future public engagement and archaeological work.
