Belinda shipwreck (lost 1824)

The sealing brig Belinda (1819-1824) was wrecked at Middle Island in the Recherche Archipelago near Esperance on 19 July 1824. All the crew were rescued by the sealer Nereus in December 1824.

The WA Museum discovered the wreck site in 1989, and excavated it between 1989 and 1991. At that time, overlapping black and white stereo-photographs were taken to create a 2D photomosaic.

In 2022-23 Curtin University HIVE Internship student Jarod Harris used the ‘legacy’ photography from 1991 to create this digital 3D model of the wreck.

Belinda is significant as the earliest-known sealing vessel to have been found in Australia, and is the only sealing vessel in Australia to have been archaeologically excavated.
