Ingredients for 6-7 meatballs:
• 350 g ground beef
• 1/3 cup split peas
• 1/2 cup short grain rice
• 1 medium onion, grated
• 2 teaspoons dried savory
• 1 teaspoon dried scallion/ spring onion
• 1 teaspoon dried dill
• 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
• 1 teaspoon dried mint
• 2  teaspoons turmeric
• 1 teaspoon paprika powder
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
• 1 teaspoon salt (+ more to taste)
• 1 teaspoon whole cumin seeds
• 1-2 tablespoons chickpea flour (depending on consistency of your mixture)
• 1-2 eggs (depending on consistency of your mixture)


Ingredients for the sauce:
• 1 medium onion, finely chopped
• 2 medium tomatoes, grated
• 2 tablespoons tomato paste
• 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
• 1 teaspoon dried savory
• 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
• 2 teaspoons meat (or vegeatble) broth powder
• 1 litre water
• Salt to taste

Ingredients for the filling:
• Semi-dried plums (if you use dried plums, soak in water for half an hour before using)
• Walnut

Notes:
• The rice that I use is short grain rice and it cooks fast so I just soak it in hot water for 1-2 hours before adding to the mixture. If you don’t have time to soak the rice or you use a rice with longer cook time, before adding to the meat, you’ll have to cook the rice for 5-7 minutes or until slightly soft.
• I use semi-dried plums for the filling, if you use dried plums, you’ll need to soak in water at least half an hour before using.
• Make sure that the sauce is enough to cover ¾ of the meatballs, if necessary add little bit boiling water.

• This recipe is different than the meatballs fried in the oil or baked in the oven, we cook the meatballs in a watery sauce so it is very important that the mixture of the meat with other ingredients is soft/sticky, otherwise the meatballs will break at the time of cooking. You can adjust the thickness and consistency of the mixture by adding more or less chickpea flour and egg.
