At only 16 years of age and in her first event back on tour after 2 months of mononucleosis, Carling Bassett made the semis of the US Open where she ran up against the Open's all-time women's champion, Chris Evert. The record 6-time champ was relentless in this otherwise highly entertaining backcourt duel that featured a lot of creative tennis with extended rallies, but usually ending with Evert getting the last word. Chrissie steamrolled 6-2 6-2 into the finals for what would be an historic 61st meeting against her arch-rival Navratilova, with their head to head series tied at 30 matches a piece.
