Thanks for stopping by ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com, today we're exploring the depths of the Hellbender, from Deep Trip pedals. The Hell Bender is a modern recreation of the infamous Gary Hurst-designed Tone Bender MKII, the most classic of all the Tone Bender circuits. Deep Trip's version omits all the finickiness of the original circuit by eliminating the germanium parts, and using more modern silicon parts instead. By using more modern parts, users are treated to a greater reliability, more sustain and much more gain. Originally, the Tone Bender MKII contained only two knobs, but Deep Trip has taken that design into the 21st century by adding three more knobs—a handy Bias control that dramatically alters the fuzz character, as well as a two-band active EQ that digs deep at both bands, cutting or boosting the frequencies by a large factor. The EQ expertly tuned by Deep Trip so that there are no unusable positions on the dials, ranging from Smooth to Bright on the Highs control and from Thick to Tight on the Lows. Because the Fuzz, Bias, Highs and Lows knobs are extremely interactive, the Hellbender redefines the sonic palette of the Tone Bender and gives players access so subsonic bass frequency, buttery violin-like fuzz and treble-boosting qualities. And unlike the originals, players can power the Hell Bender with a battery or a DC power adapter, with a front-facing indicator light to jazz up any boring pedalboad display.
