Bangladesh Navy commissioned two Umar
Bangladesh Navy commissioned two Umar Farooq class guided missile frigates in 5th November this year. Umar Farooq class are the modified and refitted version of the Type 053H3 frigates for BD Navy. Bangladesh bought four such warships from China as off-the-shelf solution until the domestically built high performance air defense frigates comes out. Currently two frigates are being refitted in China.
The Type 053H3, NATO codename Jiangwei II, are the first-generation Chinese built air defense frigates. This type of warships was entered service with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in the 1990s and 2000s. China navy built 10 vessels, four of which sold to Bangladesh Navy and remaining six ships are in active service with the Chinese Navy. They were a follow-on of the Type 053H2G Jiangwei I class.
Type 053H3 frigates has two 23,600 hp class 18E390VA combined diesel and diesel, and two 8,715 hp MTU diesel engines. It features various long-range surface and air search radars, fire controls radar systems, electronic support & electronic countermeasures as well as a Chinese Tactical Data Link.
Umar Farooq class frigates are armed with a PJ33A 100mm dual naval gun, 8 C-802A Anti-Ship Missiles (SSM), 8-cell FM-90N (HQ-7) Surface-to-air missile system, 4-unit Type 76A 37mm twin Anti-Aircraft guns, and 2 x 6-tube Type 3200 ASW rocket launchers (36 rockets) + 2 × Depth Charge racks & launchers. It can carry one Harbin Z-9C/equivalent helicopter with hanger facility.
