This car was painted before because if you look closely, you’ll see fisheye. We’ll use our DA sander to get it all nice and flat to take out all the imperfections. Check out the video as I do a demo.
The goal of prepping before paint is to get it looking flat with a matte color as for how I show in the video. This is not a final grit though. We want to finish it off with 400-grit before we paint.
For this example, I’m using a wax and grease remover. Then, we’ll take off our wax then continue sanding.
Someone once told me that he dumped all the glaze he saw when he opened up a can of bondo. What he did was wrong. You need to mix it up because those are the chemicals that make the bondo work and get hard. For every golf ball size of body filler, you need to put about eight drops of hardener.
Remember to never push too hard when sanding. Otherwise, you’ll distort the panel and your sanding won’t come out even.
I totally screwed up on the bumper cover. This is what happens when you don’t put enough hardener in your body filler. It didn’t dry so it was sticky. So, I had to scrape it off with a metal putty knife. Make sure to use a wire brush to clean the putty knife to take off the sticky substance.
It took me an hour to go over all the spots, scrap it all off and then, wipe it off with lacquer thinner. If you don’t take out the sticky substance, it will just clog off your sandpaper on your disc when you’re sanding. It will be a nightmare.
A professional isn’t somebody who doesn’t make mistakes, a professional knows how to correct the mistakes he made.
A tacky body filler stays tacky about an hour or so and just clogs the sandpaper when you rub it. Then, we’ll put some new body filler on it, rasp it then block sand it with 80-grit to take out the high edges.
Now, we’ll spray our Evercoat Filler Primer on all of our panels. We’re doing heavy coats to fill in all the imperfections. We’ll then cut this down with 400-grit.
There was a point that I used to do a lot by hand. You can go by hand if you want your jobs to be really nice. You can feel all the little imperfections by hand. Now, I’m using an old piece of 400-grit to wash the quarter panel down.
Like what I always say, always wash the entire car down before you do any paint job then blow it off and make sure it’s really dry. I called it off for a day. The following day, I blew it off and started masking it.
Remember, one quart of base coat will make two quarts after mixed with your reducer. It’s a 1:1 mixture. The can that I show you in the video will make half a gallon of paint.
You don’t have to worry about overspray if you’re doing a base coat clear coat, unlike the enamel paint. Just to remind you, never tack between clear coats.
When spraying your bumper covers, you need to make sure that you’re getting all the areas. You may have to adjust your nozzle from a wide fan to a narrow fan to get some of these areas. I show you how to do that step-by-step in the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint VIP Course.
Now, we’re adding our first coat of clear to the panel. People have different ways of doing this. I start off with a medium wet coat.
When you’re laying your clear coat on, you’ll see a speck of dots. That’s fine because it’s just atomizing on your panel. That disappears as it flows out to your panel. On my final coat, I make sure to lay it on heavy.
