These were among my favorite songs of 1967.   This was sort of a turning point year, not only for the kind of music we listened to, but also the way we listened to it.

I originally compiled this list about 13 years ago, now I have four years of the 1960's done.

As was often the case in the sixties, there were a variety of styles represented here.    Motown, and soul music in general was as popular as ever this year.   While garage rock, which hit a peak in 1966, still carried into '67, the music as the year went on, became more sophisticated; songs ran longer, and psychedelic music  became more prevalant, with bands such as The Doors, Jimi Hendrix Experience and Jefferson Airplane making an impact.    As for the British invasion bands, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones adapted, with the Fab Four releasing the landmark Sgt. Pepper album, and the Stones with Their Satanic Majesties Request.

How we listened changed as well.   While Top 40 remained the main formet which played the hit 45 rpm records, entire albums started becoming the norm, and some FM radio stations started playing deeper cuts from many of the releases.   One album cut made this list; there would be more to come in subsequent years.

All songs, with the exception of the abovementioned album cut made the Billboard chart, either the Hot 100  or Bubbling Under.   If the song also made Billboard's year-end top 20, or New York's top 40 station WABC's top 20 of the year, that is indicated as well.
