These were among my favorite songs of 1970,, counted down from 100 to 1.

For years, I had thought that 1970 paled in comparision to 1969 or even 1971, but after a closer look, I realized that 1970 was a very good year in music.    Rock music came of age and the year was the start of splintering into new subgenres, like singer-songwriter, heavy metal, as well.  Much of the music this year came in the wake of Woodstock, which took place the year before, and there were references to that festival  several times in 1970's music.

Although FM radio stations had started playing album oriented, free-form rock, it really escalated in 1970 to the point that AM  Top 40 stations started injecting album cuts in its playlist to go along with the usual pop fare.   I still listened to WABC but many of my friends were listening to albums and many of them are featured here.

Soul music and especially Motown still played a big part in the music, especially with the arrival of The Jackson 5.    Diana Ross launched her solo career, but her old group The Supremes continued without her.   British music, especially bubblegum-oriented pop  songs, scored as well.

Most songs released as singles made Billboard Hot 100, its peak position is  shown.  If the song also made Billboard's year-end top 10, or WABC's top 10 of the year, that is indicated as well.
