The Athletics are hurdling toward contraction, a dirty word not uttered in baseball circles since ill-fated attempts to remove the Minnesota Twins and Montreal Expos from Major League Baseball. The roster has already been stripped for parts and sold, any usable infrastructure is being gutted and outsourced to the Sacramento Kings and River Cats staff. The team is basically one of those car frames on blocks you see driving through Rio Linda on any given day.

Everyone is lining up to potentially buy the Oakland A’s as the team’s Las Vegas stadium plans feel less and less realistic by the day. Joe Lacob, Vivek Ranadive and mystery buyers. And while probably everyone on the baseball hierarchy from the commissioner’s office to the owners, players and even fans want him to sell, there is a catch. The Flip Tax.

Contracting the A’s gives Fisher the money wants while providing MLB with a third expansion team. For Fisher, the benefit here is clear. He gets an above market rate for his franchise without needing to pay the Flip Tax or spending money on a new stadium. If Manfred and the other owners offered him $1.5 billion, he’d probably take it.

For MLB, they can scrap the A’s and then turn around and sell someone an expansion team for $2 billion. They end up making more than they would have with the relocation or Flip Tax. We also know that those running baseball could care less about history. Hell, Manfred would probably take delight in being the one who kills off the A’s brand.

We know there are three groups out there and probably more willing to pay $2 billion for an expansion team. In this scenario, MLB and Fisher get the money they want and a way out of a huge problem they contrived to create in the first place.

Contracting the A’s franchise would be such a terrible thing to do for a sport steeped in history and tradition. Then again, those running baseball have proven time and again to hate that history and tradition.
