Duluth’s Harbor Heros: Spar and Lee A Tregurtha (4th of July!)

It’s the 4th of July!
It’s the 4th of July! Wanted to celebrate by putting out a video for the ships and crews who keep the country running, and the two best examples I could think of are the Coast Guard, and the Lee A Tregurtha. Both of these are older videos, taken early this spring but never got released. Also threw in some fireworks at the end!
Video 1 is the cutter Spar, departing on her first voyage of the season through some choppy surf. She’s responsible for the safety of all vessels on Lake Superior, and lays down buoys, ice breaks and other significant tasks. She has a crew of around 60.
Video 2 is the Lee A Tregurtha departing on her first voyage of the season. The last large WW2 US naval vessel still in operation, she has an incredible history and played a critical role in World War 2 as an oiler in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, surviving U-Boat attacks, escorting one of the invasion fleets into France, and was present at the Japanese Surrender ceremony. Since the war she’s been active as a laker after being extensively modified over the years, hauling iron ore for the steel mills in Indiana and Ohio. She is seen here departing her winter layup and a multi-million dollar refit that will keep the 82 year old vessel active for the foreseeable future.
Honorable mentions to the Arthur M Anderson, Edwin H Gott and all the other ships that have responded to those in distress, especially those like the Anderson’s crew who have put themselves in danger in the attempt.
Despite the interesting politics as of late (which while I have my opinions I do try my best to keep myself and my channel out of it, so any political complaint comments here will get deleted) , the country, its history, and REAL people who keep things running: the common people, regardless of their opinions. The actual workers and people, like the ourselves and the sailors who we see here on a daily basis to keep everything running are still worth celebrating! Enjoy the day and let’s hope the weather stays clear for the fireworks this evening!
