Biosocial theory in dialectical behaviour therapy or DBT is the underlying theory which explains how mental health symptoms arise and how they continue. Breaking this down the 'bio' part of the biosocial theory suggests you are biologically predisposed to emotional vulnerability. Traits such as high emotional sensitivity and impulsivity are biological and part of your genetic makeup, which means they are inherited as a trait. Biological disposition is different for everyone, we are all born more or less sensitive, anxious and impulsive and this forms the basis for how you react with your world.

For example Sandra has very intense emotional reactions and its can take days to emotionally calm down once she is upset. This vulnerability is influenced by Sandra biology. But it's the interaction between Sandra biology and and her environment that can has caused problems, not biology on its own. As a child Sandra's parents would hit her every time she was emotional upset and therefore Sandra missed the opportunity to learn more effective ways to manage her emotions. Sandra became more and more emotionally dysregulated, her thinking become distorted, she couldn't control her impulses and experienced problems processing information.
Sandra experienced what we call an invalidating environment. This is the 'social' aspect of the biosocial model. The Biosocial equation is:

Biological vulnerability + an invalidating environment = emotional dysregulation.

I want to share with you a few characteristics of an Invalidating environment:

* An Intolerance towards emotional expression.
* Communicating that specific emotions are wrong
* Communicating that you should be able to manage emotions without support
* Not responding to emotions that need a response

I also want to stress that an invalidating environment can be abusive, but doesn't have to be abusive. A parent may be experiencing financial stress and they cannot give their child the attention or support they need or the parent may have an illness and not be able to attend to the child needs. We can also experience an invalidating environment as an adult.  For example a partner or friend that ignores you the you are upset can maintain and intensify your biological sensitivity.

If you have a biological disposition is to be emotionally sensitive and you find yourself in conditions or surroundings they don't complement you, the interactions that happen can lead mental health issues. DBT can teach you how to understand and accept difficult emotions and learn new skills to manage them.
