n this video, we are going to discuss your trailer’s weight distribution and how properly loading your trailer will keep you safer on the highway and increase the life of your trailer and towing vehicle.

When loading your trailer, proper weight distribution is paramount. The more weight you have near your tongue, the further forward your trailer’s center of gravity goes.

It is recommended that your tongue weight represent 10-12% of your overall trailer weight. This way, their is constant downward force on your tow vehicle. If you have too much weight towards the front of your trailer, the tongue is likely to sag putting more stress on your tow vehicle and your trailer.

Too much stress on the rear of your tow vehicle can also cause your vehicle to sway and shake when at highway speeds. Trailer sway can lead to a loss of vehicle control which could potentially put you or others safety in jeopardy.

There are a few common practices that help prevent trailer sway.

When loading cargo, place it so that it is heaviest in the front ahead of the trailer’s axles. Also, center your cargo from left to right and use tie downs to keep the cargo from sliding back and forth. The evenly distributes your load and keeps you safe as you move down the highway.

Play close attention not to load your trailer with too much tail weight. It is very dangerous to tow with too much weight near the back. Unhooking the trailer with too much tail weight could result in the trailer tipping backward catapulting the tongue of the trailer up towards you when unhitching.

It is paramount that your loaded trailer is level with the ground when attached to your towing vehicle. Keeping your trailer level with the vehicle is also helpful in the event you need to stop abruptly.

If the bottom of the trailer is not level, adjust your ball height. Depending on the type of hitch you have, it can be as simple as raising or lowering the ball or as simple as replacing the hitch.

When starting out on the road, increase your speeds gradually until you reach high speeds to help prevent trailer sway. If your vehicle or your trailer does start to sway, try adjusting your cargo accordingly.
