How to Identify Spotted Nettle (Lamium maculatum)

This is spotted nettle or deadnettle, a perennial that flowers in summer.

Spotted nettle has a spreading, clumping habit with long, thin branched stems. The stems are square-shaped, and are covered in fine, stiff hairs.

The leaves are obovate, and have rounded teeth along their margins. They are covered in stiff hairs, and are dark green with large pale blotches along their midrib.

The flowers are borne in small terminal whorls, and have a unique hooded shape. They are light pink to lavender in color.

Spotted nettle likes full to partial shade, and prefers moist, well-drained soil.
