VENICE CARNIVAL REVELLERS GATHER TO SEE 'FLIGHT OF THE ANGEL'
Thousands of people gathered in Venice's St Mark's Square on Sunday (31JAN2016) for the traditional "Flight of the Angel" parade.
In the traditional celebration, which in various forms dates back centuries, a woman dressed in a carnival costume descends from the bell tower of Saint Mark's Basilica.
Irene Rizzi was chosen for the stunt. The performer said she was extremely emotional afterwards.
"Yes, I'm very excited and indeed I also started to cry when I was able to see everything, and it really is a great honour to be seen by everyone," she said.
Originally called the Flight of The Turk, the tradition dates back to the 16th century, to the times of the Serenissima (the old Venetian Republic), when a Turkish acrobat walked a tightrope running to the top of the tower.
According to Venice tradition, elaborately costumed Carnival-goers stroll through the city showing off their finery, finished with hand-painted masks.
