Upadesa Sahasri 15.41-48 - Consciousness cannot be known by another consciousness

नान्येन ज्योतिषा कार्य रवेरात्मप्रकाशने । स्वबोधान् नान्यबोधेच्छा बोधस्यात्मप्रकाशने ॥15.41
nānyena jyōtişā kāryam, raver ātma-prakāśane svabodhān nānya-bodhecchā bōdhasyātma-prakāśane
No other light is required, for the sun, to reveal itself. Likewise, no other consciousness, in addition to itself, is needed, to reveal consciousness.
न तस्यैवान्यतोऽपेक्षा स्वरूपं यस्य यद् भवेत् । प्रकाशान्तरदृश्यो न प्रकाशो ह्यस्ति कश्चन ॥15.42
na tasyaivānyato 'pekşā svarūpaṁ yasya yad bhavet prakāśāntara-dṛśyo na prakāśo hy asti kaścana
No other consciousness is needed, to know that, which is conscious by nature. Consciousness cannot be known, by another consciousness, because, there is only one consciousness. Being of the nature of knowledge, one does not require another knowledge, to be known.
व्यक्तिः स्यादप्रकाशस्य प्रकाशात्मसमागमात् । प्रकाशस्त्वर्ककार्यः स्याद् इति मिथ्या वचो ह्यतः ॥15.43
vyaktiḥ syād aprakāśasya. prakāśātma-samāgamāt prakāśas tv arka-kāryaḥ syād iti mithyā vaco hy atah
A non-shining object, is revealed when illumined by, something that shines. Non- shining object, only reflects, the light of a shining object, which illuminates it. Hence "It shines because of the sun" is a false statement. It reflects the light, is true one.
यतोऽभूत्वा भवेद् यच्च तस्य तत् कार्यमिष्यते । स्वरूपत्वादभूत्वा न प्रकाशो जायते रवेः ॥15.44
yato 'bhūtvā bhaved yac ca tasya tat kāryam işyate svarūpatvād abhūtvā na prakāśo jāyate raveh
If X didn't exist before, and arises from Y later on, then X is an effect of Y. But, light is not an effect, because, light is the sun's nature. It was not non-existent earlier and then produced by the sun.
सत्तामात्रे प्रकाशस्य कर्तादित्यादिरिष्यते । घटादिव्यक्तितो यद्वत् तद्वद् बोधात्मनीष्यताम् ॥15.45
sattā-mātre prakāśasya kartādityādir işyate ghațādi-vyaktito yadvat tadvad bodhātmanīşyatām
Being shining by nature, the sun, etc. is considered an agent of illumination, that reveals pots, etc. The same is true for Self, which is conscious by nature and hence the knower.
बिलात् सर्पस्य निर्याणे सूर्यो यद्वत् प्रकाशकः । प्रयत्नेन विना तद्वज् ज्ञातात्मा बोधरूपतः ॥15.46
bilāt sarpasya niryāņe sūryo yadvat prakāśakaḥ, prayatnena vinā tadvaj jñātātmā bodha-rūpatah
When a snake leaves Its hole, the sun "reveals" It effortlessly. In the same way, the Self "knows" without any effort, due to its nature as conscious.
दग्धैवमुष्णः सत्तायां तद्वद् बोधात्मनीष्यताम् । सत्येव यदुपाधौ तु ज्ञाते सर्प इवोत्थिते ॥15.47
dagdhaivam uşṇaḥ sattāyāṁ tadvad bodhātmanīşyatām saty eva yad upādhau tu jñāte sarpa ivotthite
Fire becomes an "agent" of burning, by its mere presence. The same is true for Self, as being an "agent" of knowing. The Self is considered as a "knower," only due to the presence of adjuncts, just like the sun, which is called illuminator, in the presence of a snake.
ज्ञातायत्नोऽपि तद्वज् ज्ञः कर्ता भ्रामकवद् भवेत् । स्वरूपेण स्वयं नात्मा ज्ञेयोऽज्ञेयोऽथवा ततः ॥15.48
jñātāyatno 'pi tadvaj jñaḥ kartā bhrāmakavad bhavet svarūpeņa svayaṁ nātmā jñeyo 'jñeyo 'thavā tataḥ
Without effort, Self becomes a knower. So it also becomes a doer, like a magnet. By nature, Self itself, is neither known nor unknown.
