In this lecture/discussion video from my Spring 2014 Religion in America class at Marist college, we begin to discuss the textbook for the class (America's Religions: From Their Origins to the Twenty-first Century 3rd. ed., by Peter Williams), focusing on Chapter 15, "The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)".

We start by reviewing the situation of the English Civil War, discussing the chaos that it wrought not only in terms of politics, but also in terms of religion, giving rise to a number of different, largely short-lived sects.  Then we discuss the "seekers," and in particular George Fox, the first of the Religious Society of Friends (also called "Quakers").

We also examine how and why distinctives of the Friends -- e.g. using the informal "thou" -- tended to get them in trouble.  One particularly important doctrine is the conception that the Holy Spirit or the spirit of Christ speaks to individuals through the "Inner Light".  We discuss the revolutionary aspect of this doctrine, and how it structures Friends' religious services.

We then discuss William Penn, the founding and history of the "Quaker State," i.e. Pennsylvania, established deliberately to provide a setting of religious liberty and freedom from persecution.  We also discuss some of the splits which occurred within the Friends' community, spurred by matters such as wealth and prosperity, influence by more evangelical Protestants, the move to the frontier, and the centrality of the Inner Light.

Since videos discussing religion tend to get a number of polemical, poorly informed, and off-topic comments, I've set comments to require review and approval before they'll be publicly posted.
