Light aircraft typically use full power during takeoff, while larger transport category aircraft may use reduced power to prolong engine life, minimize maintenance costs, and reduce noise emissions. In emergency situations, power can be increased to enhance performance. Before takeoff, engines are routinely run up at high power, especially for piston engines, to check for any engine-related issues.
When the aircraft reaches rotation speed (Vr), the nose is lifted to a nominal 5°-15° pitch attitude, increasing lift from the wings and achieving liftoff. This process, called rotation, allows the aircraft to move its main landing gear while still on the ground. Flight controls are gently maneuvered to achieve this change in aircraft attitude. The plane lifts off independently once the proper air displacement occurs under/over the wings. Otherwise, taking off without a pitch-up would require cruising speeds while still on the runway.
