Getting from Manali to Leh
Getting from Manali to Leh by public HRTC bus is not for the faint of heart. It takes two days, organising your own accommodation in Keylong on the way. It is actually two completely separate bus tickets as well, requiring you to purchase your ticket for day two in Keylong the night before a VERY early start (like 5am departure!). The first bus from Manali to Keylong takes about 6 hours, the second from Keylong to Leh is over 12.
Was it worth it? 1000% yes. The road up to the Rohtang Pass from Manali is amazing, very windy and very busy with day tourists. Once over the pass however the whole trip becomes amazingly quiet, and the scenery is incredible. Around every corner was another incredible view of the Himalayas, and the geography of the area changed significantly throughout the trip so it was impossible to get bored.
Day two's bus journey ascended through a number of passes, the highest being over 5300m, and I can assure you at this altitude we were really feeling the thin air. It eventually descends into the famous Indus Valley and then up in to Leh at 3500m.
This is without a doubt the most amazing bus journey we have ever done, what a way to get to Leh!
