This video describes the difference between Schizoid Personality Disorder and Schizotypal Personality Disorder. Both of these disorders are in Cluster A in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Schizoid Personality Disorder is characterized by detachment, being a “loner,” no interest in forming relationships, a deficit in social skills, taking jobs that isolate them from others, no close friends, decreased interest in pleasurable activities, indifference to praise or criticism, cold or flat affect. Clinically significant distress is not required for a diagnosis of Schizoid Personality as stated in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Schizotypal Personality Disorder is characterized by ideas of reference, odd beliefs, unusual perceptions, odd thinking or speech (e.g. elaborate, metaphorical, vague), paranoid ideation, inappropriate and constricted affect, peculiar behavioral appearance, lacking close friends, and social anxiety. Both disorders are characterized by lack of close friends and unusual affect.
